Around 2.4 million people are living with chronic hepatitis C (HCV)

Thanks to therapy options, it’s a new era in the treatment of hepatitis C. Treating hepatitis C used to require painful interferon shots and a combination of pills — with cure rates hovering around 50%, at best. Today, it’s as simple as taking new drugs called direct-acting antivirals, which work by zooming in on the virus. As a result, today’s cure rate for hepatitis C is almost 100%.

Even with that cure rate, the disease is by no means eradicated. The number of new hepatitis C cases has tripled in recent years as a result of the opioid epidemic and rise in injection drug use.

With new medication options available, the risk of contracting hepatitis C still looming, and many patients still actively treating the disease, it’s more important than ever that patients select an appropriate pharmacy to help them manage their medications.

Yes. Drug Mart offers the blister pack, multi-dose medication packaging to any patient who take more than 5 medications per day. Each pack is made up of 28 individual blisters containing a person’s prescribed medication for a specific time and date. This service is completely free-of-charge.

Manufacturers have prescription copay assistance programs. Our staff is trained to find these savings and help lower the price you pay for your prescription. In most cases, patients pay zero dollar out-of-pocket for their hepatitis c prescription medication.

It’s commonly caused by a viral infection, but there are other possible causes of hepatitis. These include autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis that occurs as a secondary result of medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.

Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver due to a viral infection. The virus that causes the infection is called hepatitis C virus (HCV). A person contracts the hepatitis C virus by coming into contact with infectious fluids and secretions from someone else who is already infected with hepatitis C virus.

Most experts believe that the risk of sexual transmission of HCV is low. Most studies show that only a small percentage of people – usually ranging from 0-3% – contract HCV through unprotected heterosexual intercourse with a long-term, monogamous HCV-positive partner.

Hepatitis C is transmitted primarily by exposure to blood containing the hepatitis C virus. Current research suggests that if you’re in a long-term, monogamous relationship with a partner who has hepatitis C, your risk of contracting hepatitis C is quite low — unless you also have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Hepatitis C virus can survive in syringes for up to 63 days.

HCV can survive for up to 3 weeks in bottled water.

Hepatitis C is mainly passed on through using contaminated needles and syringes or sharing other items with infected blood on them. It’s also a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can be passed on through unprotected sex, although this is less common.

The most significant difference between hepatitis B and hepatitis C is that people may get hepatitis B from the bodily fluids of an infected person. Hepatitis C usually only spreads through blood-to-blood contact. Many people who have hepatitis do not become aware of it until the infection has advanced.

There are 3 main types of hepatitis: hepatitis A, B, and C. Hepatitis C can be more severe and is the most deadly, but even those with acute illness can recover without lasting liver damage. Up to 70% of those chronically infected with hepatitis C develop chronic liver disease, and up to 20% develop cirrhosis.

People with hepatitis C can live many years after diagnosis, but the range varies. A 2014 study showed that patients infected with hepatitis C virus died on average 15 years sooner than people who did not have the illness.

  • Skin and eyes that appear yellowish (jaundice)
  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Itchy skin
  • Dark urine color
  • Pale stool color
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tendency to bruise easily
Symptoms can include:
  • Fatigue
  • Sudden nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially on the upper right side beneath your lower ribs (by your liver)
  • Clay-colored bowel movements
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low-grade fever
  • Dark urine
  • Joint pain
  • Yellowing of the skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • Intense itching

A common skin rash related to hepatitis C is called urticaria. The rash is typically itchy and widespread, which means it might be on numerous places on the body. The rash is typically red and might lead to skin swelling, which can last for many hours. It might even look like an allergic reaction.

Many chronic HCV sufferers also complain of getting aches and pains. Large numbers get sharp pains over the liver (found in the upper right corner of the abdomen) which can sometimes be very alarming.

During the acute phase of hepatitis C, only a small number of people (about 25 percent) actually experience symptoms of infection, such as fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Many people with chronic hepatitis C have no symptoms of liver disease.

Viral hepatitis, such as hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV), is diagnosed by your symptoms, a physical exam and blood tests. Sometimes imaging studies such as a sonogram or CAT scan and a liver biopsy are also used.

Despite claims on the Internet, no natural remedy has been proven to cure hepatitis C. There may be remedies that improve symptoms associated with hep C, but none has permanently eradicated the virus.

Chronic hep C can be cured with prescription medications called direct acting antivirals (DAAs). Being cured means the hep C virus is not detectable in your blood months after treatment has ended. Current treatments have cure rates over 95%.

I so appreciate the dear people @Drug Mart! I am recovering from cancer and one day while in Chemotherapy I was told I... would need a certain cream right away, but I wouldn't be able to pick it up that day.however there is this very courteous and sweet young lady named Michele that assured me it would be delivered to me in at my daughter's home in Woodbridge, NJ, because that is where I go after having treatment. The kind of caring and compassion received there have made the staff endearing to me and has restored my faith in customer service again.read more

I have known Vik and his family since they opened. They have bright back what it means to have a home town family... operated pharmacy. He remembers you, that you have had a baby etc. He is compassionate and always goes above and beyond. He trains his staff to pursue their own dreams. Some have gone on to school. My prayer is that God gives him a long healthy life and that his business continues to prosper. Oh and BTW if you move he does mail order so he can continue to be your pharmacist no need to switch!read more
